Henrik Leion: Where experience and experimentation go hand in hand

Henrik is an example of how long experience coupled with a curious mind can foster an environment of experimentation with new technologies.

Henrik sees himself as a problem solver, a man who helps clients find a solution to whatever task is at hand. His method is combining long experience with curiosity and new technology.

- My over 20 years in this industry have given me a wide network of highly skilled people and experience from numerous tools and techniques. The key is to combine that with new ideas and solutions that will help solve the clients’ issues. We often work with complex and therefore exciting projects.

Henrik and his team always try to push the boundaries of what they master, in an on-going effort to learn.

- I’ve experienced disruption after disruption in my career, and it has been fun to try to be on top of our game. The three recent ones for us have been cloud, AI and security. We always base our solutions on elements we know and adding something new. We do our homework and never implement solutions we’re not confident will work. But there’s always some element of risk, which is thrilling and gives plenty of opportunities to learn.

Focus on AI

Henrik and his colleagues at the Tietoevry office in Kalmar are deeply involved in many AI projects and during the pandemic they even developed their own on-prem AI solution.

- We wanted to test how we could work with AI locally, answering the security concerns many clients had with cloud technology. Many of the security issues have since been resolved, but clients valued our willingness to experiment and create demos. Real projects came out of that initiative.

Henrik’s department is named Applied AI & Security with good reason, as security issues are paramount in the development of new technologies.

- We’re working on independent and autonomous AI systems, which raises the dilemma of securing that information doesn’t leak or become misused, but at the same time making information available to the users.

An example is using health records.

- Doctors and nurses can normally only access one patient journal at a time, while AI solutions have access to all information. This dilemma raises interesting questions about how we are to use AI in the future.

To Henrik it’s important to balance the technological possibilities with responsible solutions that safeguard personal integrity.

- We must protect GDPR and the AI Act, I believe that will give us as a society a long-term advantage. I get the impression that some users of AI technologies are galloping into a dystopia at full pace, but I’m not afraid that AI will be at conflict with humanity. But we have to be considerate of what information we make available...

Henrik and his team have worked with solutions for clients ranging from the telecoms industry to pharmaceuticals via production, public services and insurance companies, to name a few.

An open culture

Henrik and the rest of the Kalmar team have managed to create an environment where they cherish experience and experimentation equally. It’s in many ways thanks to the culture that has been nurtured for a long time.

- We have a very open culture and a freedom to build what we deem is the best solution. If you have ideas and are competent, you’re encouraged to explore new solutions.

The benefit of working in a big company is also the diversity of the employees and the offices.

- When you reach the size of Tietoevry there’s room for everyone – not that we hire just about anyone. Quite the contrary. But I do value the diversity we have and that we have offices with different areas of expertise. Being able to pull on those resources when needed doesn’t only mean we can deliver better solutions to our clients but it also gives us as employees ample opportunities to learn. There’s good reason why I’ve stayed here for so long.
