Michael Kommenda: From Research to Real-World AI

Michael Kommenda, Senior Consultant for AI Solutions at Tietoevry Create, turned a lifelong interest in programming and academic research into a fulfilling role in the tech industry.

Now shaping AI strategy and working with clients across Europe, Michael shares how Tietoevry supports his growth, curiosity, and drive to make a real-world impact.

A passion that started early

Michael began programming at the age of 15, eventually earning degrees in bioinformatics and software engineering, followed by a PhD in computer science. He spent years in academia — conducting research, teaching machine learning, and leading heuristic optimization projects. But over time, the urge to apply his work knowledge to real-world scenarios grew stronger and led him to transition from academia to industry.

“I’ve always been fascinated by how computers can solve problems that humans struggle with”, he explains.

Michael joined Tietoevry after a sabbatical, drawn by a LinkedIn job ad and recommendations from former classmates who had worked at the company for over a decade.

“The interviews were inspiring and challenging and convinced me this was the right next step.”

Since joining, he’s worked on multiple AI-focused client projects and has taken on an exciting role in technical pre-sales, helping shape Tietoevry’s AI strategy both in Austria and globally.

One of his notable moments at Tietoevry was delivering a keynote address at the Microsoft AI Tour in Vienna — where he got a chance to showcase both his expertise and Tietoevry’s role in the AI space.

Staying current in a fast-changing world of AI

“Programming today is very different from when I started. You must stay curious and adaptable.”

Michael is excited about how software is becoming more intuitive and adds, “The way we interact with technology has completely changed over the  years and is continuing to do so. This is a thrilling time! We once had to define everything in rather complex syntax, but we can describe our intent – even verbally – and a computer generates the requested content.”

Michael believes in continuous, small improvements and says that in tech you cannot afford to be stagnant. He keeps up by reading news, watching videos, listening to podcasts, and experimenting with new tools.

“I focus on growing my skills, improving my environment, and refining how we work. Progress is something we build daily.”

His biggest motivation is helping others succeed, “I enjoy enabling people to do their best.” Though not a formal mentor, Michael supports his colleagues and believes in leading by example.

“You can learn something from almost anyone. I try to help others grow by challenging and encouraging them.”

Working across cultures brings fresh perspectives

Michael feels excited working with smart, motivated people towards a shared goal and acknowledges that this kind of collaboration naturally drives him. He values Tietoevry’s international environment.

“Working across cultures brings fresh perspectives. It takes time to understand different motivations, but it’s incredibly rewarding.”

He acknowledges the open, respectful, and inclusive culture: “Everyone’s opinion is valued. That creates a healthy workplace.”

He also values the flexibility the company offers, stating, “I can define when and how I work. That autonomy and trust make a big difference.”

Final thoughts

Michael’s journey is proof that a curious mind and a people-first attitude can lead to a rewarding career in tech. At Tietoevry, he’s found a place where his expertise, passion, and drive make a real difference — for his clients, his team, and his own development.
